Tower Top Focus Solar Energy Collector System
The tower top focus solar energy (TTFSE) collector system is the most efficient and cost-effective stand-alone photovoltaic solar system. The critical elements
of the TTFSE collector system are shown in Figure 7.8. This system consists of focusing mirrors, a black-body solar collector, boiler and steam turbine, which can be mechanically coupled to an electric generator capable of generating electrical energy in excess of 250 MW per day . This TTFSE collector system has the highest capacity to collect the solar energy. This system offers a sophisticated technology capable of reflecting the sun鈥檚 energy with mirrors to an elevated central point where it is efficiently absorbed and converted to heat by a black-body solar collector. The system offers high concentration ratios, leading to an overall conversion efficiency exceeding 30 percent and temperatures ranging from 550掳C to 650掳C. This high temperature in the boiler permits generation of superheated steam to drive a highspeed steam turbo-alternator capable of producing AC electrical power exceeding 250 MW. This thermal energy power system offers electricity generation cost per kilowatt-hour (one kilowatt-hour = 3413 BTU) that approaches a competitive price with oil and gas.
